Hymns Ancient & Modern has provided hymnody to the Church of England for over 150 years. The edition we use at St. Peter & St. Paul, Saltwood, Hymns Ancient & Modern New Standard was originally published thirty years ago and our copies are now looking rather well-worn. Thanks to a generous gift – supplemented by the Chancellor through Gift Aid – we are in a position to replace these. Mr Antony Wilson, our Director of Music, and Mr William Fittall have chosen the successor to this iconic and ubiquitous hymn book. This has now been published as – Ancient and Modern: Hymns and Songs for Refreshing Worship.

I am delighted to report that the new hymn books have arrived and to dedicate them, we will have a Songs of Praise at 6.00pm on Sunday 16 June in Saltwood Church. We are inviting members of the congregation to submit their favourite hymn from the new hymn book (no hymn book will contain everything, but with 847 to choose from I am confident most people’s favourites will be included!) and to be prepared to give a short introduction as to what their choice means for them. If you would like to peruse the contents, please click here.

That allowed the proposed pastoral scheme, to dissolve that benefice and create two new benefices, to come into effect.

Immediately the new benefice was formed the Reverend Nicholas Cooper became Rector of the Benefice of Lympne and Saltwood, and the Reverend Tricia Hill was licensed as Assistant Curate in the benefice.

On February 2nd, or the nearest Sunday to it, we celebrate the Presentation of Christ in the Temple also called “Candlemas”. Luke chapter 2 describes this as being forty days after his birth, hence this celebration forty days after Christmas. The traditional blessing of church candles on this day recalls Simeon’s reference to the infant Jesus as the “light for revelation to the Gentiles”.

“For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.

Luke 2:30–32

Traditionally, in Italy the feast (La Candelora) is considered the last cold day of winter – we are rather further north so I can’t promise that! However, we will be celebrating this wonderful occasion and you will be warmly welcomed, so come and join us.

Read on and order…

It’s hard to believe that, out of the whopping 80 million chocolate Easter Eggs sold each year, not one of them mentions Jesus on the box. Until now that is. The Real Easter Egg is the first and only Fairtrade chocolate Easter Egg to explain the Christian understanding of Easter on the box. It also supports charity and development projects. The Real Easter Egg is now in its third year of production with more than 200,000 sold so far. Why not help to establish the egg? This year the Real Easter Egg has a free activity pack in the box which includes the Easter story, activity poster, free iTune download and a sticker set.

“The Real Easter Egg gives consumers their first ever chance to buy an Easter egg that not only tastes good but does good, bringing to light the Easter themes of hope and new life. The Real Easter Egg is a chance to educate and do good – giving money to charitable projects.
