Many people have been happily married at St Stephen’s, and God’s Blessing is waiting for many more who want to make their marriage vows in His presence.

To be married in church, either the bride or groom needs to reside in the parish of Lympne, so that banns of marriage may be called (a legal public announcement that marriage is intended).

If neither reside in the parish, it is necessary for either the bride or groom to be on the Church Electoral Roll before the banns of marriage are called.

To be on the Church Electoral Roll, an applicant must have been baptised (Christened) and have “habitually” worshipped in St Stephen’s for six months.

If none of these conditions can be met, the Parish Priest is glad to hold a service of the Blessing of a Marriage, which is very similar to a Marriage Service, except the signing of the Marriage Register has to take place at a civil ceremony.

All of these regulations are the law of the country and not simply local tradition.

It is always best to contact the Parish Priest by telephone (01233 720898) or email (RevRALove@msn.com) to talk about the arrangements before booking.

The cost from 2008 for the service, together with bells and the organist is a maximum figure of £500.  The parish priest gives the bride and groom the opportunity to choose a traditional or contemporary service, as well as their readings, hymns and music.

An informal Marriage Preparation Day is held every year, when the Church entertains the couples for lunch.

The Church remains available for any future “ups and downs” that may follow in married life. At the heart of the Wedding Day is the assurance of bride and groom:

“to have and to hold from this day forward;
for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish, till death us do part;
according to God’s holy law.”
